I first chose Cherry for the top but changed to Pink Ivory - it was the right decision. The Flame Maple frame set it off beautifully.
It was necessary to identify and label each piece and find the best grain orientation before cutting.
By overlapping different adjacent materials they can be sawn using the top piece as a guide creating perfect joints

Ivory would have been a perfect material for the skin bits but the ILALA PALM was a real find. It is as hard as nails, polishes like glass and grows on trees.

The figure is about 11cm high - finish is 3 coats of Danish Oil and Paste Wax polish. Hinges and lid support from Brusso of New York.
The ‘miniature' Intarsia aspect of this obsession was far more complex than I ever imagined. I enjoyed the journey but would have to think hard before tackling another with this level of detail. The design went through so many iterations of thinking over a long period - phew.
